6 Civil War Myths, Busted
One hundred and fifty years after the Civil War began, its echoes are still felt across the United States in lingering divisions between North and South, in debates over the flying of the Confederate flag, and even in arguments over the basic causes of the conflict. Myths both big and small persist about the bloodiest conflict in American history.
Here are a few:
Myth #1: The Civil War wasn't about slavery.
The most widespread myth is also the most basic. Across America, 60 percent to 75 percent of high-school history teachers believe and teach that the South seceded for state's rights, said Jim Loewen, author of "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong" (Touchstone, 1996) and co-editor of "The Confederate and Neo-Confederate Reader: The 'Great Truth' about the 'Lost Cause'" (University Press of Mississippi, 2010).
"It's complete B.S.," Loewen told LiveScience. "And by B.S., I mean 'bad scholarship.'"
In fact, Loewen said, the original documents of the Confederacy show quite clearly that the war was based on one thing: slavery. For example, in its declaration of secession, Mississippi explained, "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery the greatest material interest of the world … a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization." In its declaration of secession, South Carolina actually comes out against the rights of states to make their own laws at least when those laws conflict with slaveholding. "In the State of New York even the right of transit for a slave has been denied by her tribunals," the document reads. The right of transit, Loewen said, was the right of slaveholders to bring their slaves along with them on trips to non-slaveholding states.
In its justification of secession, Texas sums up its view of a union built upon slavery: "We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable."
Myth #2: The Union went to war to end slavery.
Sometimes, Loewen said, the North is mythologized as going to war to free the slaves. That's more bad history, Loewen said: "The North went to war to hold the union together."
Pres. Abraham Lincoln was personally against slavery, but in his first inaugural, he made it clear that placating the Southern states was more important. Quoting himself in other speeches, he said, "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." [Read: The Best Inaugural Addresses Ever]
Abolitionism grew in the Union army as soldiers saw slaves flocking to them for freedom, contradicting myths that slavery was the appropriate position for African-Americans, Loewen said. But it wasn't until the Emancipation Proclamation of 1963 which left slavery intact in border states that hadn't seceded that ending Confederate slavery became an official Union aim.
Myth #3: Blacks, both free and slave, fought for the Confederacy.
The argument over whether blacks took up arms to fight for the government that enslaved them is a bitter one, but historians have busted this myth, Loewen said.
"It's completely false," he said. "One reason we know it's false was that the Confederacy by policy flatly did not allow blacks to be soldiers until March of 1865."
The idea had been brought up before, University of Tennessee historian Stephen Ash wrote in 2006 in the journal Reviews in American History. In January of 1864, Confederate Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne proposed enlisting slaves. When Confederate President Jefferson Davis heard the suggestion, Ash wrote, he "not only rejected the idea but also ordered that the subject be dropped and never discussed again in the army."
About three weeks before the Civil War ended, however, a desperate Davis changed his tune. By that point, the war was lostand few, if any, blacks signed up.
White officers did bring their slaves to the front, where they were pressed into service doing laundry and cooking, Loewen said.
Myth #4: The pre-Civil War era was the low point of U.S. race relations.
Slavery was a low point, no doubt, but the era between 1890 and 1940 was a "nadir of race relations," Loewen said. Tiny steps toward racial equality were reversed. For example, in the 1880s, decades before Jackie Robinson stepped onto a major league field, a few black baseball players faced down racism to play for the professional leagues. That all changed in the 1890s, Loewen said.
"It was in these decades that white ideology went more racist than at any other time," Loewen said. Eugenics flourished, as did segregation and "sundown towns," where blacks were either officially or unofficially not allowed.
"In that period the North is not going to correct Southern historians for claiming that slavery and race had nothing to do with the Civil War," Loewen said. "The North is being incredibly racist itself."
The race-relations nadir gave rise to myths 1-3, Loewen said. It also heralded the Dixie ties now heralded by Union states such as West Virginia and Kentucky, he said.
"Kentucky never seceded. They did send 35,000 troops to the Confederacy and 90,000 to the U.S." Loewen said. "Today Kentucky has 74 Civil War monuments. Two are for the U.S. and 72 are for the Confederacy."
Myth #5: Civil War surgeons were butchers who hacked off limbs without anesthesia.
It's a Civil War cliché: The brave soldier taking a gulp of whiskey and biting down on a bullet while a surgeon takes off one of his limbs with a hacksaw. Fortunately for Civil War casualties, though, field surgery was not quite so brutal. According to the National Museum of Health and Medicine, anesthesia (mostly chloroform) was commonly used by both Union and Confederate field surgeons.
Almost 30,000 amputations took place due to battlefield injuries, according to statistics kept by the Army Medical Museum. But these amputations weren't evidence of saw-happy doctors. Rather, the "minie ball" bullets used in the war were large-caliber and particularly good at shattering limbs. Amputation was often a safer option than trying to save the limb, which could lead to fatal infections in the less-than-hygienic field hospitals.
Myth #6: A Civil War bullet impregnated a young Virginia woman.
One of the stranger stories to come out of the Civil War is that of a young Virginia woman standing on a porch as a battle waged nearby. Allegedly, a stray bullet passed through the scrotum of a soldier and into the young woman's uterus. She survived, only to give birth to a baby boy with a bullet lodged in his scrotum nine months later.
If it sounds too incredible to be true, it is. The story first appeared in The American Medical Weekly in 1874, according to debunking website Snopes.com. Written by an "L.G. Capers," the article was clearly a joke, as the editor of the journal clarified two weeks later. Nevertheless, the story has spread via outlets as varied as "Dear Abby" and the Fox television show "House."

Shirley Maclaine Maclaine: 'i Bedded Three People In One Day'
Caption: SHIRLEY MACLAINE (Picture) Opening night of the Broadway production of 'Catch Me If You Can' at the Neil Simon Theatre - Arrivals. New York City, USA ....
Movie icon Shirley Maclaine discovered she was a fan of monogamy after bedding three men in one day.
The Oscar winner has opened up about her scandalous love life and open 30-year marriage to businessman Steve Parker in new book I'm Over All That, and accepts her three men in one day tale may shock many fans.
She says, "I wasn't into 'sexcapades', although I tried it once; I had three people in one day. It was on a political campaign, where everybody was doing the same thing (and) I just didn't wanna be left out.
"It was not my style at all; I'm a serial monogamist."
But that isn't to say MacLaine is a faithful girlfriend - or wife.
Despite her 30-year marriage, the Oscar winner tells TV chat show host Oprah Winfrey she's not fond of the institution and enjoyed a very special agreement with Parker.
She explains, "I had affairs and so did he, but we were very good friends. I loved the freedom and so did he.
"I've had an awful lot of lovers... and a lot of awful lovers."
In her chat with Winfrey, which aired in America on Monday (11Apr11), MacLaine confessed to romances with Robert Mitchum and French movie great Yves Montand.
MacLaine and Parker divorced in 1982.
Jenn Sterger Talks Brett Favre Incident
Casey Needham
New York Jets sideline reporter, Jenn Sterger, is set to appear on ABC's Nightline and Good Morning America this week.
Sterger will be heard by millions of Americans this week when she is interviewed on Nightline and Good Morning America. Some might be wondering who she is and why exactly she is being interviewed.
Sterger was formerly employed by the Jets in 2008, right when Brett Favre came to New York for a brief stint with the Jets. He must have found the young woman attractive because following the season, reports started to come out about Favre engaging in some less-than-flattering behavior.
The NFL investigated the incident in which Favre was accused of sending scandalous photos to the young woman who did not ask for them. The LA Times reveals, Sterger wishes she could go back to when none of this had ever happened.
She says she cannot go anywhere without someone knowing the incident she was involved in. Ultimately, the NFL fined Favre $50,000 for not cooperating with the investigation and that was that. Sterger, on the other hand, has had a rough time getting her career off the ground since then.
As Reuters reports, Sterger says that she is often just a joke now. Her career as a television host and possible anchor has been at a standstill since the incident.
Perhaps appearing on ABC will revamp her career as a station may give her a shot at the spotlight somewhere away from the drama.

Jenn Sterger, former Jet's game-day host, finally speaks about Brett Favre's alleged scandalous photos. This was disclosed by sports news sites April 10, 2011.
Brett Favre, Jet's retired quarterback, has been slapped with a $50,000 fine in 2008 by the NFL for refusing to cooperate fully in the investigation of the case. Sterger said she kept her peace for several months, and all she wanted was to work, but the news about Favre's photos was never put to rest, which prompted her to speak up.
Sterger, has said that she did not make money out of the whole brouhaha and that "It was humiliating" for her. Sterger's lawyer stated in an interview, when the case was just starting, that Sterger
"does not want to be known as Brett Favre's "text woman."
A two-part interview of Jenn Sterger with "Good Morning America" will reveal more truth about Favre's scandal, which was published on line, stating that Favre sent Sterger explicit pictures and voicemails. Favre admitted having sent voicemails, but not nude photos.

Jenn Sterger on Brett Favre: I Didn't Intend to 'Play a Victim'
By RYAN CREED
April 11, 2011
Jenn Sterger, the former New York Jets game-day hostess at the center of the Brett Favre scandal, says she doesn't see herself as a victim and just wants her life to return to normal.
"It's never been my intention to ever play a victim in this whole thing," Sterger told George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview. "I have known from day one when this was going on in 2008, I'm not the right martyr for this cause."
Watch the exclusive interview tomorrow on "Good Morning America" at 7 a.m. ET and on "Nightline" at 11:35 p.m. ET and Wednesday on "Good Morning America" at 7 a.m. ET.
Sterger was embroiled in a tabloid scandal after racy photos and voicemails allegedly from NFL quarterback Brett Favre surfaced.
"I just want my life back," Sterger said. "That's all I'm asking for. Just to be able to go back to work. To be able to go back to enjoying what I do. Entertaining people. Making people laugh. The hardest part about this whole thing is that I am a ridiculous person. I love to entertain people, and to say crazy things. And I'm pretty unapologetic about it."
She says she can't be the person she is anymore because "I'm still the joke" and that all she ever wanted was to do her job.
"I haven't made a dime off anything in this whole situation. Not from the pictures. Not from Favre. I never wanted to sue anyone. That was never an intention of mine," she said.
"I'm not a gold-digger," she said. "The only way I wanted to make my money this whole time was to just have a job."
Favre has one of the most storied careers in football -- a three-time MVP with more than $7 million in endorsements. In October 2010, the sports blog Deadspin.com posted voicemails and nude pictures Favre allegedly sent to Sterger when he played for the Jets in 2008. Favre has admitted to leaving the voicemails but not to sending inappropriate pictures of himself.
"Wanted to have you come over tonight -- love to see you tonight," one recording said.
And another voicemail:
"I'm still trying, just got done with practice. I'll try the other phone you're probably caller ID'ing me but if you can make it, it would be great."

Lamar Odom: Lakers Sixth Man Battles OKC Thunder During Reality Show Premiere
Los Angeles Lakers Lamar Odom To Miss Premiere of Reality Show Because of Oklahoma City Thunder Game
Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom will be on two completely different channels tonight.
Odom and the Lakers will be hosting the Thunder with a 9:30 EST tip. Odom and his wife will be on a half hour later.
If the Lakers lose tonight it will mark the first time they have gone on a five game losing streak since 2007.
Currently holding the No. 2 seed, Los Angeles is one game ahead of third-place Dallas and two ahead of fourth-place Oklahoma City with three games still to play. The Lakers own the tiebreaker over both the Mavericks and Thunder, and can lockup the second seed with a win over the Thunder, coupled with a Dallas loss Phoenix.
Odom is competing with Jason Terry for the Six Man of the Year Award. He has averaged 14 points and eight rebounds a game and as really concentrated at the defensive end of the floor. Sportbookpro.com thinks Odom is more than worthy:
"This season Lamar Odom was one of the biggest All-Star snubs along with LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers). Not only has Odom put up solid numbers all season long, but he has been one of the biggest reasons for the Lakers success as of late and is more than deserving of this award."
He will need to help contain Kevin Durant if the Lakers expect to win with his strong combination of length and athleticism.
If you want even more of Lamer, switch the channel over to E!. His new reality show entitled Khole and Lamar is set to premiere tonight at 10 EST.
Watch as Lamar gets in trouble for not paying enough attention to Khole. Not quite the same as watching him get yelled at by Phil Jackson for not passing out of the double team but it should be entertaining.
Get two-for-one Odom tonight on a T.V. near you.
Click here for the latest odds for the Lakers to win the 2011 championship.

The Masters: Tiger one behind Adam Scott
USA TODAYis live blogging the season's first major all weekend.
Join us for updates and reports from our guys in Augusta. Rory McIlroy, the 21-year-old from Northern Ireland, began the final round at 12 under par, four shots better than Jason Day, Chas Schwartzel, K.J. Choi and Angel Cabrera. Tiger Woods started at -5 and defending champion Phil Mickelson was at -3.
6:22: Scott hits his third shot out of the bunker and gives himself a chance for par on No. 17. Cabrera's tee shot on the 16th goes over the green but will still be putting.
6:20: Amazing. After hitting the flag with his second shot and rolling off the green, Luke Donald then chips in for birdie and is now -10.
6:18: Schwartzel birdie putt on the 16th puts him at -12 and shares the lead with Scott in trouble on No. 17. Choi's birdie putt on the 16th goes right. He remains at -10.
6:15: Day strokes his tee shot on No. 17 and still can catch his playing partner Scott who is in trouble. But he needs a birdie. Cabrera's eagle putt slides by. He'll tap in to go -10 and head to the 16th.
6:13: On the par 3, 16th, Schwartzel's tee shot is 20 feet below the hole. A birdie ties him for the lead. Scott's tee shot on on No. 17 is way left. Don't rip up those win tickets just yet. Choi has a 12-footer on No. 16 to go -11.
6:10: Schwartzel is now -11 to tie the lead while Scott has a 3-footer. Scott does hit his to go to -12 with two holes to go. Choi's birdie on 15 gets him to -10. Let the fun begin.
6:09: Day misses his long birdie putt. Scott is now up.
6:08: Choi has a birdie putt to go to -10 but the tournament is in the hands of Scott and his 3-foot birdie putt.
6:04: Jason Day on the 16th rolls back and he's got 18 feet. With Scott inside three feet, Day must make his.
6:03: On the 16th, a par 3, Scott hits to within three feet. The tournament is now his to lose.
6:00: Scott saves par to remain at -11. Ogilivy finishes at -10 and is tied with Woods.
5:59: After his round Woods said "we'll see" about whether he played well enough. "one back, we'll see what happens" and "I'm going to eat, I'm starving."
5:56: Scott's approach on No. 15 gets away a bit and will have some trouble two-putting from where he is. His first putt comes up short.
5:54: Woods finishes with par and five-under 67. He was five-under after 8 holes but didn't make hay on the back nine. Still, he's the leader in the clubhouse and that's a big name to overcome.
5:52: Woods' birdie putt on No. 18 flies by. He'll have to settle for par to stay -10 to be the leader in the clubhouse.
5:51: Day's third shot on the 15th bounces over. There is no room for error with the leaderboard so crowded.
5:50: Luuuuuke! Donald is back with a birdie on 16 to get to -10.
5:48: Adam Scott just hit the ball into the stands. No lead is safe out there. Day from behind the tree punches out on the 15th.
5:47: Woods' approach on No. 18 is 162 yards away. He is safely on green but has about 18 feet for birdie. He has to have the putt.
5:46: Jason Day on trouble with tee shot landing next to tree on 15th.
5:43: Leader Scott hits a great tee shot on the 15th.
5:42: Bob Van Pelt eagles No. 15 and is at -10. Holy cow people.
5:41: Woods probably needs birdie on No. 18 and he hits a solid tee shot.
5:39: Day's birdie putt on No. 14 slides by so his playing partner Scott is the leader. Woods makes his putt and heads to 18, one day to Scott.
5:37: Scott putts for lead on No. 14 and makes it. Day now up to match him. The Australian curse could end with a Scott win. Watch out for Bo Van Pelt who has a putt to go to -10 on No. 15.
5:36: Tiger's chip on 17 checks up. He's got a 7-footer for par. A must for him. The 18th is not a great birdie hole. Of course, he's Tiger Woods.
5:35: Day and Scott are both sitting on birdie putts on No. 14 to take the lead. Guys are playing out of their minds.
5:34: Ogilivy has now made five consecutive birdies and ties for the lead. He has two holes to play.
5:32: Woods' approach on No. 17 is not a great one. He'll have a short chip for birdie. On No. 13, McIlroy goes into Rae's Creek. Now painful to watch the young, great golfer.
5:28: Cabrera drops a stroke. Ogilivy has a great chance for birdie on No. 16 to join the leaders. K.J. Choi also could get to -10 and McIlroy is now pretty much out of it as he's +7 on the day. Just a meltdown on Masters Sunday. It happens.
5:26: There are now five players at -10 with Jason Day birdie on No. 13.
5:25: Ogilivy is now at -9. Shades of the U.S. Open. Just when we take our eyes off the guy he comes into the picture.
5:23: Woods on No. 16 has 12-foot birdie putt. The crowd jumps and roars but it does come in enough. He'll have to settle for par. Woods may have been the most surprised man on the course when it didn't drop.
5:22: Cabrera puts his drive on No. 12 into the bunker on the par 3.
5:19: McIlroy misses his birdie putt. Nothing but nothing has gone right for the three-round leader. As this point, it appears he'll not be the 2011 winner. Choi has now dropped back a stroke. Scott, Woods, Cabrera and Schwartzel all tied at -10.
5:16: McIlroy has a chance for a birdie. The fact that he has gotten up off the mat is spectacular in itself. Of course he'll have to hit the putt. At the same time, Bo Van Pelt just eagled to go -8.
5:14: Woods does tap in and is officially tied for the lead. If you can be disappointed with a birdie to tie you for the lead this is an example.
5:12: Woods from 4 1/2 feet on No. 15 is off to the right. He'll tap in to tie for the lead but just a bad miss for Woods. These are the ones you expect him to sink.
5:11: After the triple bogey, McIlroy hits a good tee shot on No. 11.
5:10: Cabrera's tee shot on No. 11 is excellent. Ogilivy just birdied his third consecutive hole and is -8. We've seen him win a U.S. Open this way by lurking under the radar.
5:08: Tiger hits a magnificent shot on No. 15 and will be putting for eagle to take the lead.
5:05: McIlroy's putt for 6 slides by so he'll take a 7 and drop two shots back. Scott, Schwartzel, Choi and Cabrera all at -10 now.
5:03: McIlroy's fifth shot is on the green but he's got a long putt for double-bogey. Tiger hits a bomb on No. 15. He's back in the hunt with a birdie.
5:02: This may be one of the worst holes in Masters history for a leader. McIlroy s now sitting four after hitting another tree on the par 4, 10th. He will certainly lose the lead but by how much is now the question.
4:58: After hitting in water, Donald double bogeys the 12th. Scott birdies the 11th and is -10. The wheels are totally falling off for McIlroy as his third shot on No. 10 is dreadful. He is facing down Schwartzel, Cabrera, Scott and Choi all at -10.
4:55: McIlroy punches out on his second shot. Woods' 12-foot birdie putt at No. 14 brushes by the rim. He taps in for par.
4:53: McIlroy's tee shot on No. 10 is awful. He hits a tree and bounces back for a 100 yard tee shot. He is between cabins. Possibly the worst tee shot of the tournament for any player. CBS still has not shown the shot.
4:51: Luke Donald found the water on 12 with his tee shot. Woods great approach on No. 14. Has birdie opportunity.
4:48: This is where horse racing gets interesting as every golfer has now made the turn for home. McIlroy has the one stroke lead over playing partner Cabrera, Schwartzel and Choi. Woods one more stroke back.
4:45: McIlroy's long birdie putt on No. 9 never had a chance. He blocked it right. Expecting par but he'll have the lead at the turn as Cabrera's birdie putt fades.
4:43: Woods will in fact settle for par on No. 13. This is a hole he dominated all week. Unfortunate.
4:42: McIlroy starting to get it into gear. He has a nice approach on No. 9 and has about a 12-footer for par. Maybe its true that the youngsters wake up a lot later than others.
4:41: Woods on the par 5, 13th is now has a poor chip shot and now has difficult putt for birdie. A par is not acceptable for him on this hole. Cabrera's approach on the ninth is outstanding. He may now be playing the best golf in the field.
4:37: Luke Donald now at -9. We do have the eye of the Tiger but we can't take our eyes off the rest of the field. They are burning it up and will make us look like fools. Willy Loman would tells us "attention must be paid."
4:33: Cabrera makes his birdie and McIlroy his par. Angel is now at -10 and Rory at -11 but it was opportunity missed by the leader.
4:30: Cabrera has a makeable par putt and McIlroy's chip is chunked. Just a horrible shot. He will probably end up with par which is unacceptable on the par 5, No. 8. Especially since Woods blew a 3-footer on No. 12.
4:28: OMG! Tiger just missed a 3-footer for par. Unbelievable the way he was playing. He drops two back to McIlroy. That is more shocking than gambling being found in Casablanca.
4:26: McIlroy on the par 5, No. 8 from 263 yards out goes off the back of the green. He can still chip and putt for birdie.
4:24: Schwartzel settles for a very, very disappointing par on No. 8. A crushing blow. Woods' 30-footer on No. 12 slides by. Should be settling for par.
4:22: Former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger on Twitter: "Lots of relatively easy pins on 2 nine..brace yourselves for a birdie fest. "
4:19: Schwartzel's chip on the par 5, No. 8 leaves him about 8 feet for birdie. The ball did take off a bit on him. Woods' tee shot on par 3, No. 12 is middle of green. Longish birdie putt but completely safe.
4:11: McIlroy, the only player in the top 17 over par today, on the par 5, No. 8 sends the ball out there. He is looking for back-to-back birdies. Woods' birdie putt on No. 11 (where is has not played well in the past few years) is just short. He'll tap it for par.
4:10: Forget what I just said about McIlroy. He rolled in his putt from off the green and now has a 1-stroke lead. But I was right about Cabrera who also made a birdie and is now -9.
4:07: Don't forget Cabrera who is putting for birdie on No. 7. McIlroy also has a birdie try but he's just off the green and didn't hit a great approach considering the bomb he hit off the tee.
4:04: K.J. Choi hits an 8-foot birdie and is now -9 and one back. The stage is set for one of the greatest Masters finishes ever because Luke Donald is now -8.
4:01: Woods' long birdie putt at No. 10 skates by and he'll settle for par. To show you how hot Woods is, CBS's Peter Oosterhuis sounded like it was a routine tap-in for the man.
4:00: McIlroy makes his best statement of the day with an absolute bomb on the 7th hole.
3:57: Woods' approach on the 10th is good but not great. He'll have a long birdie putt. But there is a difference when you trying to charge and when you are tied for the lead. Tiger just needs to avoid disaster and continue to put some pressure on fellow competitors.
3:54: McIlroy has given himself no real chances today. He just hit a mediocre tee shot on the par 3, No. 6. This is not good on any Sunday but on a Sunday when Tiger Woods comes out of hibernation is just scary.
3:51: It has been pointed out that McIlroy and Cabrera are quick players and the slow play is killing them. Nothing is affecting Woods who blasts his tee shot on No. 10 down the middle.
3:48: Woods' hold on the lead remains as he hits a 12-footer to save par. He shoots 31 on the front and makes the turn at the top of the leaderboard.
3:47: Woods, Schwartzel and McIlroy now tied for the lead at -10 as McIlroy lips out a par putt.
3:46: Not a great bunker shot by Woods but decent. Has a 12 footer at No. 9 but it could have been disastrous.
3:43: The people at CBS are probably sore from high-fiving themselves over Tiger's performance. The sight of a soaring Tiger then hitting into a bunker and trying to scramble is made for TV drama.
3:41: Woods' second shot from behind a pine tree on No. 9 is solidly struck but pulled into the bunker. A tough up and down. McIlroy on No. 5 hit an absolutely mediocre approach. He is showing no real rhythm thus far.
3:40: USA TODAY columnist Christine Brennan tweets: "Let's repeat what we said Thursday. This golf course is made for TigerWoods. It was his Masters to lose Friday. It's his to lose now."
3:38: CBS is showing Woods' drive and Jim Nantz said he is not totally stymied behind that tree.
3:35: Tiger's tee shot on No. 9 goes behind a pine tree. Stay tuned. Woods and Schwartzel and Woods are -10 and one back of the leader.
3:31: At No. 8, Woods is putting for eagle to go 10-under. He goes dead center. Get this man a fifth green jacket. He is now 5-under for the day. Four birdies, an eagle and a bogey. How vintage can you get?
3:28: Scoreboard re-up: McIlroy, shaky at the start, is one stroke up on Schwartzel.
3:23: Woods approach on No. 8, a par 5 is just spectacular. He is putting for eagle and a chance to get to -10. If you just woke up from the couch you would think they were showing clips from 1997 or 2005.
3:21: McIlroy's putt on No.3 is awful. He has to settle for par. His first three holes could have been worse but not much for him.
3:17: McIlroy on No. 3 hits a great shot into the green and is 8 feet from his first birdie.
3:16: From Jason Sobel of ESPN: "I said it yesterday, but worth repeating: Last year's Open champion, Louis Oosthuizen, is Schwartzel's best friend. They grew up competing together and play most practice rounds together. Schwartzel hung around at St. Andrews and watched his pal win. I have no doubt it gave him the confidence to know he could do it himself."
3:15: Woods' birdie putt on No. 7 is good. He's at -8. The game is afoot my friends. Four birdies and a bogey so far.
3:11: Tiger has another birdie putt coming up. McIlroy stripes his tee shot on No.3. The scramble on No.2 may have settled him down. Stay tuned.
3:10: Schwartzel is now tied for the lead after pitching in for eagle. This after chipping in for birdie. Two of the most amazing shots in tournament history. He is -3 after three holes.
3:08: Cabrera is now -9 with a birdie on No.2. McIlroy does get his par. He can thank a great fourth shot for that.
3:07: A nice bunker shot from McIlroy but he's a got a tricky putt for par on a hole he needed birdie. Cabrera's eagle putt is short.
3:06: A humor break from USAT's Gary Mihoces who also covers the NFL: "Football observations at Masters: Lee Westwood looks like LB, Tiger looks like DB and Angel Cabrera looks like coach at golf outing."
3:04: Tweet from ESPN's Jason Sobel: "Entering the day, top five players represented five different continents. Tomorrow's topic on OTL: The decline of golf in Antarctica. "
3:03: With 250 yards to go, he throws the ball back into the sand. Just a disastrous start for the leader. He sits three and Cabrera is putting for eagle.
3:01: Woods shot birdie putt on No. 6 dead center and he gives a little pump. He's now -7 and just four back. He has bogey and three birdies on the day.
3:00: McIlroy hits an awful shot out of the sand on the Par 5, second hole. He hit the top of the trap. The field is not only coming after to him but he's coming back to them.
2:56: Woods on Par 3, No. 6 puts his tee shot eight feet from the pin. Tiger yelled "be perfect" while it was up in the air. Not even the golf ball wants to disappoint Woods. McIlroy sends his tee shot on No.2 to the right. Very shaky start for the leader.
2:55: Cabrera and McIlroy approaching par 5, No.2. This a birdie that the leader desperately needs after his opening bogey.
2:53: Adam Scott now -8. Look for everyone to go to the long putter if he wins today.
2:50: McIlroy, who had three bogeys coming in for the week, misses a short par putt on No.1 and his lead is now two strokes.
2:48: Cabrera's long birdie putt on No.1 comes up just short. He taps in for par. McIlroy from off the green puts his birdie putt right by the hole. Got a tricky one coming back but should make. Woods has another birdie putt come up short.
2:46: Tradition break alert from USAT's Gary Mihoces: Luke Donald won par 3 contest. Nobody's done that and won Masters. But hey, he's 8 under. And there are four par 3's at Augusta."
2:45: McIlroy gets a break on a bad second shot. It holds just off the green.
2:44: Tweet from Tiger's former coach Hank Haney: Despite what people said Tiger lost last year because of his putter and this year he has 5 three putts in 58 holes, not good."
2:43: Luke Donald alert. He is now -8.
2:42: Chas Schwartzel hits a chip and run from 30 yards out to roll in for a birdie on No.1. Shot of the day. He is now -9 and alone in second place.
2:40: McIlroy's opening tee shot is just ripped and blows by the bunker. Statement made. No European has won the Masters since 1999. (Jose Maria Olazabal).
2:36: Woods's par putt on No. 4 slides right at the start. He bogeys to drop back to -6. Very disappointing after two consecutive birdies.
2:34: Cabrera and McIlroy on the tee. Cabrera having his son caddy. Didn't Jack do that successfully 25 years ago? K.J. Choi hooked on No. 1 but hits a nice shot into the green.
2:32: Woods long birdie putt on No. 4 is whacked and comes up six feet wide to the left. A toughie coming back for par. He's -2 on the day. Ross Fisher now -6 as the leaderboard bunches up.
2:30: Just like Butler vs. Connecticut and Brad Stevens and Jim Calhoun, Angel Cabrera, 40, almost twice the age of McIlroy. Youth or experience?
2:27: Woods goes long on the Par 3, No. 4 but is on the green. Woods seemed to be bothered by a sound or movement prior to his swing.
2:24: Ogilvy hits a long, curling putt on No. 2 to go to -7.
2:22: Woods now at -7. Be afraid, be very afraid. Two birdies in three holes. Could Tiger be Nick Faldo to McIlroy's Greg Norman?
2:20: Jason Day, who is playing his first round without McIlroy (the guy he's currently chasing) as a partner, goes slightly right on his opening tee shot.
2:18: Mickelson's doubles No. 5. Back to -2. Woods' approach on No. 3, a wedge, puts him three feet from a second consecutive birdie. He has never won a major by coming from behind.
2:10: On No. 2, Woods birdie putt from five feet is dead center. He's -6 and the putting woes from yesterday are, for the time being, in the past. He stripes his tee shot on No. 3 and is in position to set up another birdie.
2:09: CBS analyst Nick Faldo, who put the jacket on Woods in 1997, talks about how important a win for a young golfer will mean for the game and for the whole group of young players. Faldo is also the guy who hunted down Greg Norman from six back.
2:07: Couples and Ogilvy both par No.1 . They get to the par 5, No.2 which is a must birdie for all golfers trying to catch the leaders.
1:59: Tweet from USAT Gary Michoces: Rory McIlroy on practice tee in black pants. No clash with green jacket. That followed: Rickie Fowler, in Okla. State orange top to bottom, says, "Nothing looks good with a green jacket." I say anthing looks good. He's even.
1:55: Woods makes par to open up on Sunday. Par 5, No. 2 coming up.
1:46: In case you were wondering, (and my golf buddy Paul Finkel was) McIlroy is paired with Cabrera instead of Day in the final round because Cabrera was first in the clubhouse yesterday at -8.
1:41: Don't count out Phil yet. He birdies No. 2 to go to -4. The longest journey begins with the first birdie. Stricker and Westwood also get early birdies to get to -4.
1:37: You can score out there. Kyung-Tae Kim, who is playing by himself as last on the leaderboard to start Sunday, is -4 after 14 holes. That includes birdies on 12, 13 and 14.
1:32: It should be noted that the top 16 finishers this year get an automatic bid for 2012. For guys like Tiger and Phil it is win or bust. But for some of the younger guys, a good Sunday round is paramount whether they make a charge to the top or not.
1:30: Trevor Immelman now tied for 18th after going -2 for the first seven holes. The 2008 winner is trying for his third top 5 finish in nine years.
1:23: Mickelson pars No. 1. He has 17 holes to accomplish the greatest comeback in Masters history to win back-to-back. In three days he has shown none of the charge he showed last year. The fact that he's never on in an odd year (2004, '06 and 2010) should have tipped us off.
1:20: Dan Jenkins, who has covered the Masters for more than a half-century, was asked about Tiger's swing coach and tweeted: It's still hard for me to imagine Ben, Sam or Byron with a swing coach.
1:12: Tweet from USAT's Gary Mihoces: Rory McIlRoy playing today with Angel Cabrera, winner of 2 majors. "It doesn't matter who is beside me, to be honest," says McIlroy. Ah, to be young and leading the Masters.
1:08: The defending champion is two minutes away from the tee box.
1:01: McIlroy's manager Chubby Chandler (one of the greatest names in golf) said his golfer is showing no nerves and this type of a play is a natural progression for McIlroy. He says there is a whole breed of young golfers who look like they are having fun out there and playing their game and "we'll all be lucky to be around." He also said the party is at his house tonight.
1:00: If you are a slave to the ratings (and who isn't), our man Michael Hiestand says the ratings are down from last year when Tiger made his return but up from the previous years.
12:50: People are saying that interest in Tiger Woods is waning but you wouldn't notice it by the Golf Channel coverage. The last 15 minutes have been dedicated to his game. There has not been one mention of McIlroy or any of the other leaders. Okay, just said a shot of Phil Mickelson on the range. The spell is broken.
12:41: Two tweets from DiMeglio with a hint of drama. The sun is breaking through the layer of haze. A hot one is still in the offing...And we have the traditional SUN pins: Short left on 9, far right on 12, far right on 14, back left on 16, short left on 18.
12:57: Early (and it is really early) there doesn't seem to be any "John Miller US Open Miracle rounds" out there. No one is better than -1 on the day. The guys out there now would have to shoot 63 to even let McIlroy know they are playing.
12:31: Clip and save: John Feinstein on the Golf Channel is picking Cabrera as one guy who could make a charge but says his darkhorse is Geoff Ogilvy. Fellow analyst Tim Rosaforte joked that Cabrera should come out in his green jacket to psyche out the 21-year-old McIlroy.
12:17: Prior to the leaders teeing off, the first goal is to find an U.S. player on the first page of the leaderboard. We began with Bo Van Pelt at 8th at -6 and Woods 9th at -5.
