There were false rumors today that Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts were giving away java on National Coffee Day. But bloggers have tracked down some freebies.
Journalists are obsessed with coffee and they were the first people on Thursday to debunk the free coffee rumors.
The Washington Post’s Elizabeth Flock says forget Starbucks and Dunkin if you are looking for a handout .
“Though rumored to be participating, Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks say they will not be handing out free coffee,” she says.
Flock lists Caribou Coffee, 7-11, Thornton’s, and Krispy Kreme as places that are giving away coffee and each company lists details on its Facebook page.
But the 7-11 offer expired at 11 a.m. and Caribou’s was a buy one, get one offer , with a coupon.
Krispy Kreme’s offer was good as long as supplies lasted.
Dunkin is doing a promotion for National Coffee Day , offering a chance to win an appearance in one of the brand’s advertisements. Also, 10 entrants will get free coffee for one year.
But Starbucks is getting a lot of heat on its Facebook page for not participating in National Coffee Day.
In 2009, Starbucks gave away samples of its VIA instant coffee in a tasting, but the popular coffee company passed on freebies for the past two years.
In fact, there were no official posts about National Coffee Day on the Twitter and Facebook pages for Starbucks. But in its defense, National Coffee Day isn’t a sanctioned event, and it seems to be more of a grass-roots marketing movement.
Starbucks has done other free coffee offers in the past, including on Earth Day.
The origins of National Coffee Day (or International Coffee Day) are murky at best, with few references to the unsanctioned “holiday” before 2009.
