Comedy Central’s “Roast of Charlie Sheen” featured laughs, tears and blood as celebrities such as Mike Tyson, Steve-O and William Shatner paid tribute to the troubled actor.
The episode averaged 6.4 million viewers and earned a 4.5 rating in the demographic of adults aged 18 to 49.
The show aired on Monday night, an hour after the season 9 premiere of “Two and a Half Men,” the CBS comedy series Sheen was fired from in March. Ashton Kutcher made his debut on the show, which earned record ratings.
Sheen, who has battled substance abuse for years, was suspended from “Two and a Half Men” just before he was fired and went on a tirade of on-air rants against the show’s co-creator. He later appeared on various news programs, touting his “winning,” party-loving lifestyle and live-in girlfriends, or “goddesses.” The actor maintained he was sober and dubbed himself a “rock star from Mars.”
Such catchphrases and issues, as well as tidbits about Sheen’s personal problems with his ex-wives, were mocked on Comedy Central’s roast of the actor.
The event was hosted by “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane and also featured the likes of “Private Practice” actress Kate Walsh, “Star Trek” actor William Shatner, Patrice O’Neal, comedian Jeffrey Ross and “Jackass” star Steve-O, who performed a stunt that involved him running into Tyson’s fist.
Steve-O had said in mid-September, when the episode was taped, that he had “asked Mike Tyson for a black eye and I wound up with two black eyes and a broken nose. Thanks so much, Brother!”
Sheen later Tweeted photos of the daredevil sporting a black eye.
“@SteveO Went back for another shot at the end to get the nose break?!? “That’s commitment my friend. Funny as hell. SheenRoast,” Sheen said.
Steve-O’s jokes about Sheen included lines such as “Your nose is like my (expletive). There’s nothing you won’t shove up there.”
Shatner made fun of Sheen’s past history with women. The actor has been married three times, has four children and has admitted a fondness for adult film stars.
“May I suggest to you, Charlie, that you re-examine your relationships with women,” Shatner said. “Prostitutes cost a lot of money, Charlie. Hasn’t anyone told you that actresses will sleep with you for free?”
Walsh took a jab at Sheen’s recent custody battle with his third ex-wife Brooke Mueller over their twin sons.
“You know what’s amazing, despite all those years of abusing your lungs, your kidneys, your liver, the only thing you’ve had removed is your kids,” Walsh said.
Following the airing of the roast, Sheen earned praises and Twitter shoutouts from celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, who the actor called “epic” back in April, as well as Mia Farrow and his brother, “Breakfast Club” actor Emilio Estevez, who called the actor “awesome.”
